Maiden is the incredible story of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. Up until then, the world of sailing was purely a men’s club. Many predicted this all-girl boat would give up within weeks of a grueling race that was set to last nine months and pass through the most treacherous waters on earth. Maiden is both the film’s title and also the name of the female crewed boat that entered that race. It was skippered by 24-year-old Tracy Edwards, who began sailing as a cook on charter boats, the only job allowed to her as a woman. Tracy’s dream was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure, and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up: she re-mortgaged her home to buy a second-hand boat.

Director Alex Holmes tells her story like the high stakes thriller it truly was. Since the film’s world premier at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival, it has garnered four star reviews throughout the UK media because it is truly a gripping and heartfelt tale, and wonderful feminist parable to boot!
