From one of the cinematographers behind Beyonce’s Lemonade

Part film, part baptism, Black Mother is a spiritual journey through Jamaica’s history, identity and above all its people, including street children, prostitutes, church leaders, and the disfigured and the outcast. Their candid testimonies create a polyphonic symphony, set against a visual prayer of indelible portraiture and the cityscapes and landscapes they call home. The filmmaker, New York native Khalik Allah, is a rising star of street photography and video, who previously worked shooting Beyonce’s Lemonade visual album and has also presented his own photos and films at the world’s top art museums including MoMA in New York and the Pompidou Center in Paris. He has an astounding talent for turning social documentary into a form of visual poetry, and describes his own work as “camera ministry.” Here, he offers a mesmeric and highly personal portrait of Jamaica, following the themes of water and femininity, with an image of a pregnant mother serving as a spiritual center for the film. The dialogue was captured from encounters and conversations and provides a vivid aural history to go with Allah’s spellbinding visual collage.
