2018 Urban Nomad Film Fest: May 17-27
37 Taiwan film premiers, international filmmaker visits, Grrrl Power theme
Taiwan’s top showcase for indie film and culture, the 2018 Urban Nomad Film Fest, will take place May 17-27 at the Wonderful Theater (真善美戲院) in Ximen and other venues. This year’s lineup includes 49 films, 37 Taiwan premiers and 26 screening programs as well as the Urban Nomad Film Awards, parties, panel discussions, interactive films and more. Both Saturday nights of the festival (May 19 & 26) will see free-entry parties on the gorgeous rooftop of the GoodNine Cafe, just two floors above the Theater. Highlights include Asia Premiers of documentaries The Way and Parallel Planes, and a special competition screening of the brand new film Metal Politics Taiwan.
Urban Nomad’s distinct programing style focuses on new creative voices and the idea of “culture reconsidered”, offering an important survey of important trends in culture and society. This year’s special theme Grrrl Power runs throughout the film program, with nine feature films by or about women. These include films about women icons Vivienne Westwood, Nico of Velvet Underground fame, and the first female punk band The Slits. More Grrrl Power films look at the world and issues from a woman’s point of view, like French adult video star Ovidie’s documentary about the Internet porn industry Pornocracy, the animated feature Virus Tropical based on the coming of age story by Columbian graphic novelist Power Paola, the lesbian relationship comedy White Rabbit, and radio host Obaidah Zytoon’s video memoire of the war in Syria, The War Show.
Filmmaker visits from well-known international and local filmmakers include:
- Jennifer Shagawat, producer of Here to Be Heard: The Story of the Slits and riot grrrl musician in the US (Brooklyn-based) indie band Shellshag, which will perform at Urban Nomad
- Nicole Wegner, director of Parallel Planes, a documentary on independence and music
- Marco Wilms, German director of Metal Politics Taiwan a documentary on Freddy Lim’s transition from heavy metal singer to Taiwanese legislator
- Freddy Lim, legislator, will attend the 5/21 Q&A for Metal Politics Taiwan
- Luke Cameron, Taiwan-based director of The Way, a feature-length doc on surfing in New Zealand and winner of Best Documentary at the 2018 Auckland Film Festival
- Xiao-ying 小應 (Cape No. 7 海角七號) will hold the world premier of a short film drama-comedy on indie music in Taipei, EX《註姊》
The Urban Nomad Film Awards support excellence in filmmaking by up-and-coming Taiwanese and international filmmakers making films about Taiwan. This year’s competition saw over 300 submissions, with 30 films selected for screening, including two feature films and 28 shorts. Awards include NTD 50,000 cash prizes to films and Music Videos, as well as the Far East Rising Star, which provides post-production to help a film enter the international festivals or theatrical release. Jurors include filmmaker Ella Raidel, critic and educator Lee Mingtsung (李明璁), and graphic designer Joe Fang (方序中).
