New additions to the Urban Nomad Freakout lineup include Tokyo street minstrels and ska-punk marching band Asakusa Jinta as well as Taiwan bands Inhuman (非人物種), pop punkers Go Go Rise (美好前程), and psychedelic stoner rockers Dope Purple. Newly announced DJs include Japan’s DJ Txako, who’s played Fuji Rock more than 10 years in a row and is known for getting crowds to literally dance their asses off with her highly infections mix of Latin, ska and mestizo beats. Also added is Polish producer/DJ Hubert Tas, a crate-digger and beat junkie who graduated from the first Polish edition of Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp in 2012 and will release a new album this week, on Feb 16.
Early Bird 2-Day Festival Passes go on sale tomorrow, Feb 14 at noon. Ticket numbers are limited and often sell out quickly. Buy them online at this KKTix.com link or read detailed ticket instructions here.
Asakusa Jinta, formed in 2002, have performed at top international festivals including Glastonbury, Fuji Rock and SXSW. They consider themselves to be “experimental performance artists” and a “preservation band” (in the sense of preserving tradition). They take their name and inspiration from the Tokyo historic district of Asakusa where jintas (roving Japanese street bands) once filled the streets. The band’s mixture of punk, ska, swing, and march music has been driving audiences wild since 2002. Their dynamic display earned a reputation throughout their hometown of Tokyo for vibrant (bordering on frantic) live performances, featuring outlandish swing-era-gone-mad costumes and typically standing-room-only halls. They bring the spirit of chindon’ya (traditional Japanese street performance) to life, and regularly perform while marching through the streets of Tokyo, in addition to playing festivals and concert venues.
Both Inhuman and Go Go Rise have drawn large audience to solo concerts at Taipei’s 1000-capacity indie rock venue Legacy. Pop punkers Go Go Rise released their first album a decade ago in 2009, and have supported concerts by the hipster pop star Crowd Lu (盧廣仲). They come to Urban Nomad Freakout fresh off the release of the new album Kua Yue (跨越) in October 2018 and a March 2019 tour of Japan. Inhuman are Taipei indie rock veterans known for rowdy, crowd-pleasing shows and sing-along anthems. They’re received numerous awards, including Grand Jury Prize at the 2014 Taiwan Indie Music Awards of Hohaiyan Music Festival.
