Santiago Caicedo / 2017 / Colombia / 96min / narrative animation / Spanish / English and Chinese subtitles
This beautifully animated film is adapted from the highly popular graphic novel of the same name by South American artist and writer Power Paola. Paola’s work has won acclaim for its unique female perspective and the ability to apply an every-day realism to mature themes, including sex, drug use and painful family conflicts. With grace and self-irony, Paola recounts her own coming-of-age story from conception to the cusp of adulthood. She is born by accident –– at first the doctors diagnosed her mother with a tropical virus. The household she comes up in is a family of strong women, a mother, two sisters and various aunts and in-laws. They move between Ecaudor and Columbia, all the while struggling to fit in at new schools, make friends and find her own identity. Though the insight on South-American middle class life is unique and fascinating, the larger themes are relatable by anyone.
