Lukasz Ronduda / 2017 / Poland / 77min / narrative / Polish / English and Chinese subtitles/ Taiwan premier
Inspired by the lives of Warsaw based artists, Wojtek Bakowski and Zuzanna Bartoszek, two emblematic figures of Poland’s contemporary art scene, this romance examines the relationship between narcissism and love and also deconstructs the classical idea of an “artist” and his “muse”. Wojtek is the elder and has built up a reputation as a poet and musician. Zuzanna has an autoimmune disease, but bubbles with life and is about to break through as an artist. They dress the same, and their life is one big performance, played out in public, but also at home. Slowly but surely, however, these lovers are becoming competitors. Presented in a hyper-stylised form and set to electronic music driving the story relentlessly forward, the relationship between the protagonists is dissected as an existential power struggle. The ultimate question then becomes, what is more important, art or love?
