The Queen of Ireland

Conor Horgan / 2015 / Ireland / 82min / English / Chinese subtitles / Taiwan premier

This is the story of one of the world’s most remarkable drag queens, Ireland’s own Panti Bliss. Like its subject, the film is saucy, comedic and a heck of a lot of fun. But it also offers a more serious tale of LGBT activism and how Ireland became one of the first nations in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2015. Panti Bliss, who when out of makeup goes by Rory O’Neill, went from gay party promoter to become a figurehead for LGBT rights in Ireland. She even has her own scandal, Pantigate. She tells us the role of a drag queen is to be “a court jester, whose duty is to say the un-sayable.” But she also takes her turn in the political spotlight to speak truth to power. Ultimately the film shows the ongoing evolution of Ireland into a truly equal society, as seen through the eyes of one of its most vivid, morally courageous and downright entertaining citizens.

“Best Irish Film Award” (2015) from Dublin Film Critics Circle

“Leaving aside its importance as a historical chronicle, The Queen of Ireland is a super movie, replete with tragedy, comedy, a plucky, unlikely heroine, and a sweeping dramatic arc.”   — The Irish Times
